Notable Facts:

  • The 1921 Peace Dollar is a one-year-only high relief design and the very first coin issued in the Peace Dollar series, making it highly collectible regardless of grade.

  • Due to production challenges with the high relief dies, later Peace Dollars were struck with lower relief, making 1921 the only year with this deeply sculpted design. Harshly cleaned examples like this still carry strong collector value due to the coin’s rarity and significance.

Description:

This 1921 Peace Dollar represents the first year of issue and the only year struck in high relief, a feature that gives the coin greater sculptural depth and boldness than later releases in the series. Designed by Anthony de Francisci, the obverse features a radiant Liberty modeled after his wife, while the reverse displays a perched eagle clutching an olive branch, symbolizing America’s post-WWI desire for peace.

Certified by PCGS as AU Detail with notation for harsh cleaning, this example retains much of its original detail and brilliance despite past surface treatment. It is housed in a PCGS Gold Shield holder, ensuring digital verification, professional imaging, and enhanced security.

With a mintage of just over one million and a commanding presence in hand, the 1921 Peace Dollar remains one of the most desirable 20th-century U.S. silver coins. High-resolution imagery documents both the design clarity and surface condition, making this a valuable addition for Peace Dollar enthusiasts and type collectors alike.
